Dandeli sits inside Uttara Kannada, the most forested district in Karnataka. Around it runs the Kali river, and around the river stands one of the last great evergreen stretches of the Western Ghats.
The Western Ghats are older than the Himalayas. When these hills formed, the Himalayas did not exist yet. What grows here has had that long to get it right.
Scientists call this range one of the world's eight hottest biodiversity hotspots. UNESCO lists it as a World Heritage site. The people who live here just call it the kaanu. The old Kannada word for the deep evergreen forest.
The forest around Dandeli is protected as the Kali Tiger Reserve. Hornbills nest here. Black panthers are photographed here. And every monsoon, wild bees build in the high trees, working flowers no farm has ever touched.
You cannot plant this. You cannot scale it. You can only be from here, know the people who walk it, and take what it offers.
